As many key Silicon Valley tech giants retreat from inclusivity, the sports world is doubling down on it.
But a question on my mind is ‘can tech in the sector uphold the values of sport and avoid a dangerous drift’?
Since Donald Trump’s first inauguration, there’s been a marked cultural shift in some parts of Silicon Valley. First X (formerly Twitter) under Elon Musk, then the rise of podcasts like All In, and DEI rollbacks at Meta and Amazon, all highlighting a retreat from the progressive ethos that once defined tech.
Meanwhile, the sports industry is heading the other way.
Athletes are championing social causes, and leagues are embracing inclusivity, determined to remain on the right side of history … or at least where it was once heading.
So where does that leave sports tech?
Surely the inclusive values of sport breaking barriers, uniting communities and championing diversity must remain central. It’s a subject I care about deeply and speak to often.
With so much talent in the sector, alienating it by embracing frat-house behaviour over serious leadership would be a tragic misstep.
Let’s hope the ethos of sport prevails.
